The 2018 MLB season just came to an end and it was the 136th season for the Phillies. This year marked the 15th year the team played at Citizens Bank Park and it was the first year under manager Gabe Kapler.
While the team did improve their record from the year before, they ended at 80-82, falling short of any postseason action for the seventh year in a row. At the end of the season, the Phillies landed themselves in third place in the National League East, behind the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves.
The Phillies had a strong start to the year and for the first half of the season, had some great games, so fans were disappointed at the performance during the second part of the 2018 season, going just 22-38.
Top Phillies Players of 2018
While the tea overall didn’t have an impressive record, certain players had a great season with the franchise. Aaron Nola stood out and should have been named the team MVP. In his first nine games of the season, he was 6-1 and had an ERA of just 1.99 having pitched 58.2 innings. His best performance was against the Boston Red Sox on July 30, when he went 8 innings with one earned run and 6 strikeouts. Unfortunately, the Phillies lost the game in extra innings.
As for offense Hoskins was a key player during the season and lead the team in home runs with 34, RBIs with 96, and doubles with 38. He also scored 89 times and had 137 hits. Despite his great performance at the plate, Hoskins was a weak spot for the defense as he finished the fourth-worst in DRS with -24 out of all MLB outfielders active this year.
Hope for Next Season
Even though the Phillies have made progress from the 2017 season to now, it is quite difficult to make any projections about what will happen in the upcoming season. The team has some great offensive power with Hoskins, Carlos Santana, and Maikel Franco and there is some young blood on the team that can provide some hope for making it to the postseason. However, even with the strength of the offense, the Phillies remain struggling defensively.
Fans are also wondering is Kapler is the right person for the job. He started off strong and was actually considered as a possible Manager of the Year award when the team was thriving at the beginning of the season. However, an 8-20 record through September brought that to a halt. Fans see him as bringing more negative than positive to the team and for a group that is hoping to see their team in the postseason, questions about the management are constantly arising. If Kapler doesn’t produce better results, the Phillies will remain seated behind the Nationals and Braves for some time, with no chance of breaking the seven-year streak of not making it into the postseason.
