The Flyers are a team that despite their unsuccessful seasons over the years, have remained a local favorite in Philly. The team has only won two Stanley Cups, which happened back in 1974 and 1975. Since then, they have been Conference winners, but never quite had what it took to grab the Cup and bring it home again.
Dave Hakstol has been the head coach for the team since 2015, with the help of General Manager Ron Hextall. While the coaching and management is not an issue with the team, the Flyers continue to struggle defensively, especially in the area of goaltending. However, there are some strong players this season and the team does have a great chance at being the Conference winner, though even fans doubt the postseason will be long-lived.
Top Players for the 2018-19 Season
While it is still early in the season there are a few Flyers that have already stood out on the ice and will be worth watching throughout the year, provided they are not riddled with injuries. The offensive line has some string players this year and Wayne Simmons is in the lead for team goals, scoring 7 already. However, this has come at a cost, with Simmons also earning the most penalty minutes so far with 20. Claude Giroux has racked up 14 points to lead the team and has also earned 10 assists.
As for the defense, the first pair of Ivan Provorov and Shayne Gostisbehere are the two to watch. They are considered the most talented pair in the NHL. Unfortunately, after the first pair, the defense doesn’t look so promising for the Flyers, with eth second pair being Andrew MacDonald – Travis Sanheim and the third pair being Radko Gudas – Robert Hagg. The latter pairs did not have a strong preseason showing and have already struggled at the beginning of the regular season.
Major Goaltending Issues
One of the major issues that continue to plague the Flyers is the goaltending. The team has had three different players in the position and not one has proven to be a top choice. If the Flyers wish to have any success at all during the 2018-2019 season, they need to find a reliable goalie that can offer consistency. One option that is open to the Flyers is to pick up Sergei Bobrovsky, who will become a free agent after this season. He has been one of the top goaltenders in the league. This is one issue that needs to quickly be addressed by management and if the Flyers can’t find the talent in the net, they will most likely not have a good season or the talent to lead the Flyers to even postseason play.
