Philadelphia has some great professional sports teams and the 76ers are a favorite among basketball fans.
This current 2018-2019 season marks the 70th for the franchise and they are entering the season with some amazing players and hopes of having a winning year. Upon entering the draft in 2018, the 76ers had two first-round selections and four second-round choices. These top selections were acquired through a three-way trade that was conducted with the Suns and the Bucks.
The team originally chose a forward from Villanova University, Mikal Bridges, but traded him to the Suns for the first-round unprotected pick in 2021 along with the 16th pick of the draft, which resulted in acquiring Zhaire Smith. The next choice for the team was a shooting guard, Landry Shamet.
The 76ers entered the pregame season on September 28, which consisted of four games. The team went 3-1, with wins against Melbourne United, Orlando, and Dallas.
The 2018 Regular Season
The season kicked off with a game against Boston, resulting in a loss of 105-87 on October 16. The then went on to enjoy two consecutive wins. The month of October resulted in a 4-5 record for the 76ers, leaving coaches and team members hoping for a more successful November, with 16 games scheduled. At this point in the season, the team stands in third place in the Atlantic Division, falling behind the Toronto Raptors and the Boston Celtics. They are seated 6th in the conference standings.
Before the season started, there were numerous trades conducted as well as the signing of three new players into a contract, which included Shake Milton, Norvel Pelle, and Anthony Brown. The team also re-signed three free agents, J.J. Redick, Amir Johnson, and Demitrius Jackson. The team currently has a roster of 17.
Team Leader Stats
With just one month into the season, some players on the 76ers have put up some great numbers, leading the team stats. Joel Embiid is the points leader with 27.0 and is also the leader for rebounds, with 11.8. Embiid has the most team blocks as well with 2.1. Leading the team with 8.0 assists is Ben Simmons and Robert Covington has 2.0 steals. So far, there are just two players that remain at 1.000 percent when it comes to free throws, and these are TJ McConnell and Mike Muscala.
Games to Watch During the Regular Season
As the team is a contender for the Eastern Conference title there will be some major games to keep an eye on later in the season. After enjoying 52 wins last year, the 76ers are on the hunt for an NBA title.
The first meeting between the Sixers and the Wizards will be one to watch and this game is played on November 30th. The game is expected to be a statement game for the winner. Both teams opened last season against each other and the 76ers will pose a test for the Wizards. On Christmas day, the Sixers face the Celtics and it is expected to be a playoff type of match. After losing the season opener to Boston, the 76ers will be looking for a huge win.
For the 2019 part of the year, fans will be looking forward to the January 29th game against the Lakers. Most teams will be in playoff mode at the is time and a victory here will surely help the team in their hunt for another NBA title. The February 5 game against the Raptors and the April 4th game vs the Bucks will also be two big games of the season and will be key games for the postseason positions.
